Creative Walks in Spain is all about providing a mixture of comfort and independence to our clients. We provide a structure and framework with certainty and help, whilst you enjoy your freedom day by day. Our walks can be booked exactly as they are, or you can adapt them perhaps adding days at the start or end, or at any point in between.

Where you stay

The accommodation in Spain offered by Creative Walks will be determined by the itinerary of the walking tour. In some cases there is more choice than in others but you can rest assured that we select accommodation, whether it be a Parador or wine estate, that it is typical of your region, of high standards and character. The owners of Creative Walks have many years’ experience in staying in hotels all over Spain, and use hotels that have been chosen to be right for the itinerary and our clients. When the walking holiday is based in one location, then a choice of accommodation is easier to offer.

Travel arrangements

Creative Walks in Spain includes baggage transfers and some local car or taxi transfers on some of our itineraries. Our arrangements start and end in location and do not include any methods of transport from your home to the start of the tour. However, there is usually a wide choice of transport possibilities, depending on the location, and we can give you advice on what is possible, but you book your own flights, trains and hire-car to suit your own requirements.

Support

One of the great benefits with booking a walking holiday with Creative Walks is that you receive documentation from people who know the trail, the route or the area you’re visiting. You are provided with detailed route notes, maps and local information. The trails we offer are well-walked by the people who have put the itineraries together. You benefit from that experience. Moreover, between Creative Walks and our local agents, you are guaranteed support 24 hours a day.

Self-guided walking holidays in Spain, luggage transported, itineraries, trails and single centre

The vast size of Spain and its variety of topography make it a fascinating and rewarding destination for a walking holiday. As you tread the path in Spain, you will be walking in the footsteps of history and its fusion of influences from the Celts and Romans, to the Moors and then the Catholic Kings. More recently there is the legacy of the Spanish Civil War and the emergence from dictatorship to democracy. There are vast mountain ranges which are always a challenge for walkers. On the border with France are of course the Pyrenees and then in the north of Spain, the Cantabrian mountains run parallel to the sea. In the centre and the south are vast swathes of Sierras including the Sierra Nevada. The terrain and climate changes dramatically from north to south, east to west, coast to central areas. Over the last decades, much of these mountainous areas have been made into National Parks, and within the parks there are many well-signposted hiking routes. The long-distance routes are called the Grandes Recorridos and are marked by horizontal red and white stripes. The routes follow those taken by mules, drovers and shepherds over hundreds of years. The best known is the Camino de Santiago, the GR65, the pilgrims’ trail. With Spain, take into account the climate including the heat in summer and late-lasting snow in the north.

Climate varies dramatically from region to region, with the meseta (high tableland of central Spain), Ebro basin and Andalusia scorching in summer (up to 45 degrees Centigrade), cold and dry in winter. The Mediterranean coast and Balearic Islands get a little more rain than Madrid, and the south can be even hotter in summer. The Mediterranean, particularly around Alicante, also provides Spain’s warmest waters (reaching 27°C or so in August). Barcelona’s weather is typical of the coast – milder than in inland cities but more humid.
