Lake Lucerne, or the Vierwaldstättersee, which means the Lake of the four wooded sites or cantons, is at the heart of the Swiss Confederation, whose foundation was created in 1291 with an oath taken on a meadow above Lake Lucerne. The jagged-sided lake is surrounded by mountains and enjoys a mild climate. The mountains, including Rigi, Pilatus, Bürgenstock and Klewenalp are reached by mountain railways and cable-cars and are excellent viewpoints and starts for walks. Hikes in the region can be along the lake, at medium altitude and high altitude. There are also walks with a theme such as mountain cheese, the history of Switzerland and on the trail of mountain flowers.
